The power of outdoor adventures

By Team Fostering

At Team Fostering we provide a wide range of activities for our children throughout school holidays.  This can range from trips to popular tourist attractions, theatre trips, craft activities and outdoor adventures.

Outdoor adventures always form a key part of our activities programme, and this is why:

Cost – organising activities such as climbing, abseiling, sailing and kayaking can cost a lot of money.  It can be difficult and expensive for our foster carers to arrange these experiences, where as we are able to make group bookings, with trusted outdoor providers, making it much more affordable.

Risk Taking – risk taking behaviour is a normal part of growing up.  Many of these activities look risky, but with qualified and experienced instructors, they are actually very safe.  Young people are taught about risk during these activities which helps them to develop skills to keep themselves safe as they get older.

Confidence – have you ever achieved something you didn’t think you were capable of?  Outdoor activities often require us to step out of our comfort zones, whether that be at height, in tight spaces or on water.  These opportunities help young people develop self-belief. We encourage young people to think back to these difficult moments next time they find something a little tough, and take confidence in knowing that they can do difficult things.

Team Work –Most outdoor adventures simply don’t work if you don’t work with those around you.  Whether that is taking turns, or quite literally taking someone’s life in your hands whilst belaying them up a climbing route. These activities inspire cooperation, strengthen communication and provide a sense of camaraderie as we are all in it together!

Physical and Mental Wellbeing – whether it’s getting out and being active, feeling good about what you have achieved, or being immersed in nature, these activities offer significant health benefits for our young people.  In a world where young people spend so much time on screens, these activities really do provide an opportunity to escape the online world and live life in the real world.
